Shadow Lake

Smack Mellon

2019

Coiled together using needle-point vinyl, the vertical blinds activate a space of transition within the gallery. Contrasting Smack Mellon’s exposed industrial architecture, the new doorway preludes an otherworldly warmth, scale and tactility in the rear gallery.

Inspired by the textiles of my home, I pleat, drape and pile lampshades into cascading totemic forms. The sculptures display an affection for the handmade while suggesting that more mysterious factors are at play. Raised in a devout Catholic household, I fuse the visual language of my religious upbringing with an early fascination of 80’s science-fiction and noir films to a create an installation that is eerily sublime.

Furniture, and in particular the household lamp, acts as a surrogate for the human body. A light left on in an empty room reminds us that someone was just there. The shades and the light they emit suggest a sort of timeline in which memories fade away at intervals or come into closer focus. Shadow Lake embraces light and shadow to generate an ethereal presence, which evokes the functional aspect of domestic furnishings while creating an intimate dynamic between object and viewer.
